FEEL GOOD STORY OF THE WEEKMeet Lucky, a little calf born last week. Bluey her Mum ( a Belgian Blue cow x , thus her name) gave birth one night. The next day as we were moving other cows, Elenor spotted Bluey, stating “She’s calved!! But the calf is in on the wrong side of the fence”.No one else saw the calf, while in the middle of another job, so it was decided to come back straight after the current task was finished. 30min later Elenor & Simon returned to Bluey, and the mob of cows over the fence where Elenor had spotted the calf, but no calf could be found. Searching high and low in multiple paddocks still no calf was found. As adults Simon and I began to wonder if she had calved, but she certainly looked like she had.3 days went by, checking the dams incase the inevitable had happened, shelter belts, but to no avail.Certain that a new born calf separated from its mum in the freezing and wet conditions would no longer be alive, we just couldn’t figure out what happened.Then while driving down the laneway to feed cattle a little glimpse of a calf was seen. A few hundred metres away from its mums paddock. Excited as can be, Elenor helped put the calf on the motorbike and carried it up back to the yards, where they reintroduced it to its mum. Bluey now sore with mastitis, needed some extra care from us too. But within a few days, they are back together, a very protective caring mum, and a miracle calf. Still amazed at how it survived, but happy and content, with a full stomach.
